What Are CGW and CFS Rolls — and Who Buys Left Over Coated Paper Stock? Active Listing on the Circular Industry Cloud

Posted by Admin on October, 12 2026

A parcel of 23.58 Metric Ton of Coated Ground Wood (CGW) and Coated Free Sheet (CFS) rolls is live on the Circular Industry Cloud at inacsys.com - origin New Jersey, USA. Listing #62. Ask price USD 500 per metric ton. This post explains what these two coated paper families are, what the roll grades mean, and who typically buys left over coated stock.

WHAT IS COATED GROUND WOOD (CGW)?

Coated Ground Wood - often called LWC, Light Weight Coated - is a printing paper produced using mechanical pulp as its fibre base, combined with a mineral coating on one or both sides. The mechanical pulping process retains lignin in the fibre, which keeps production costs lower than chemical pulp grades but also means the paper yellows faster over time. CGW is the standard for magazines, catalogues, advertising inserts, and retail direct mail. It delivers good ink holdout, gloss, and print quality at a lower basis weight and cost than free sheet.

WHAT IS COATED FREE SHEET (CFS)?

Coated Free Sheet is produced from chemical pulp — the lignin is removed in the pulping process, leaving a cleaner, brighter, more stable fibre. The result is a paper that is brighter, stiffer, and longer-lasting than coated ground wood. CFS is specified for premium brochures, annual reports, corporate communications, and any application where brightness, opacity, and longevity matter more than cost-per-page.

THE GRADES IN LISTING #62

The lot contains twelve roll specifications across both families. C2S designates coating on two sides; C1S on one side only. GW indicates ground wood base; WF indicates wood free (free sheet) base. HB designates a Hybrid grade - mechanical pulp base with free sheet coating properties. Basis weights run from 40 lbs (59 GSM) at the lightweight end to 130 lbs (192 GSM) at the heavyweight end. Brightness ranges from 72 BRT on the ground wood grades to 94 BRT on the heavier free sheet rolls.

WHO GENERATES LEFT OVER COATED ROLLS

Left over print rolls arise when commercial print runs close out with unused stock. Publishers, commercial printers, and paper merchants holding remainder parcels from specific jobs are the primary source. The material is full-specification - original manufacturer quality - but the seller's business is printing or publishing, not paper storage. The stock needs to move.

WHO BUYS COATED ROLLS

Independent offset printers and trade shops who run catalogue, brochure, or publication work are the natural fit for a mixed CGW/CFS parcel. Converters producing packaging inserts or promotional pieces who can match rolls to open press specifications are buyers. Paper brokers building mixed parcels for downstream resale also participate - buyers, sellers, and brokers all trade on the Circular Industry Cloud.
